LAST UPDATED 2018-03-11 04:47:29
RELEVANCE: Space Object. First known interstellar object discovered by scientists on Earth.
DESCRIPTION: Classified by the International Astronomical Union as an interstellar object, ‘Oumuamua – or 1I/2017 U1 – is an elongated asteroidal object consisting of ice beneath a carbon-covered crust.
A study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society concluded that ‘Oumuamua likely found its origins in a binary star system, one “with a relatively hot, high mass star,” according to Phys.org. It was also likely “ejected from its binary system sometime during the formation of planets.”
