    In the old days, before any reliable methods of determining death existed, there was always that slight chance you’d be buried alive.

    Devices were invented to help, with tubes inserted into coffins to provide oxygen, and instruments that would ring bells if movement was detected underground (leaving the buried person to hope that someone nearby would notice).

    There was even a burial vault with escape hatches, designed to allow easy evacuation for anyone buried prematurely.

    But does it still happen? Short answer: Kind of.

    On November 2, 2000, an individual began posting at an old website called the Time Travel Institute, a forum dedicated to the discussion of all things time and time travel related. He posted under the pseudonym TimeTravel_0, and claimed that time travel would be discovered, and the first time machine built, by the year 2034.

    Later, he would move to Art Bell’s Post to Post bulletin board system, where he would take on a different name: John Titor.

    I started using the Internet around 1999, when I was about 13 years old. We’d already had a PC for maybe five years, and a Commodore 64 well before that. But getting online and browsing the web was an awesome new thing to us.

    The old stuff had a lot of charm, too: Prodigy, CompuServe, mountains of AOL disks. Posting at the Nintendo BBS and roleplaying in RhyDin chat rooms. Stuff I probably wouldn’t do today, but back then it was awesome.
