2015: The Year of a Robot Wedding…and a Robot Duel?

On June 27, 2015, a historic event took place: Yukirin and Frois got married. Not a huge deal, on the face of it, I know. But there’s one tiny detail that makes this wedding more peculiar than others.

Yukirin and Frois are robots.

The bride, Yukirin, is a robotic version of Japanese pop star Yuki Kashiwagi. Frois, on the other hand, is a bulky red robot who I imagine was just happy to be there. Their wedding had the works – a walk down the aisle (more or less), a robotic band, a first dance, all at a smashing venue in Tokyo, Japan.

They were married by SoftBank’s “social robot,” named Pepper, and with a little help from his human underlings, Frois kissed the bride.

Meanwhile, humans who attended the event were pacified with cake to help them come to terms with their inevitable demise at the hands of their robot overlords. It was a win-win for everybody. Head over to The Daily Mail for an assortment of photos taken during the event, if you’d like to see more. The video up there has some highlights, as well.

But before you go, there’s one more thing.

Not to be upstaged by Japan’s robo-wedding, Amercia went ahead and challenged them to a duel. Well, I should say, America’s MegaBots challenged Japan’s Suidobashi Heavy Industry to a duel.

You see, they both build robots, and as the MegaBots team says in their video, “Suidobashi: we have a giant robot, you have a giant robot. You know what needs to happen. We challenge you to a duel.”

Well there you go. If the duel happens, maybe we’ll talk about it again next year.
