When I originally saw Big Dog, the first thought I had was, “Why can’t he throw cinder blocks?” I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Well, you can put a checkmark next to that wish box, because Boston Dynamics recently updated their four-legged robot to do just that. Big Dog can now pick up and toss cinder blocks with relative ease.
“BigDog handles heavy objects. The goal is to use the strength of the legs and torso to help power motions of the arm. This sort of dynamic, whole-body approach is routinely used by human athletes and animals, and will enhance the performance of advanced robots.”
This new terrifying technique is being developed by Boston Dynamics, with help from the Army Research Laboratory’s RCTA program. No doubt the ability to pick up and toss
humans cinder blocks will come in handy sooner or later…
