Amazing Ant City Discovered In Brazil

In 2010, scientists discovered an abandoned underground ant city in Brazil.

The sprawling, ventilated network of tunnels beneath the earth were once inhabited by millions of leafcutter ants, quite possibly the largest colony the world has ever known. In fact, the colony was so large and coordinated that scientists are referring to it as a “superorganism.”

No one knows when or why the colony vanished, or what may have led to its end.

The city was 500 sq ft and 26 ft deep, and the ants had excavated an estimated 40 metric tons of soil to construct it. According to the Daily Mail, this incredible feat is something akin to the Great Wall of China.

But…wait a second. That ant city didn’t look all that abandoned, did it?

Did those scientists just massacre an entire city of ants?

Maybe they did.

For science.
