Video: Attack of the Giant Octopus

By on February 17, 2014 // Science // 0 Comments

Well here’s something you don’t see every day. A Giant Pacific Octopus lunges out at a diver and tries to steal away his underwater camera.

Divers Warren Murray and David Malvestuto were swimming in Bluefish Cove at Carmel, California, somewhere around 80 feet below the surface. That’s when the octopus caught them by surprise, using its natural camouflage to hide among the rocks before jumping out and trying to eat their expensive-looking equipment.

A few flashes of light apparently got the octopus to let go. But this is clearly only the beginning of the Octopocalypse.

Anyway, the above video gives you two views: a shot of the octopus trying to eat Warren’s camera while Malvestuto keeps his own rolling on the action, and (beginning at around the 1:00 mark) stills from the nearly-eaten camera’s point-of-view.
