After Dark: Big Dog Goes For A Walk

Maybe it’s Big Dog’s housefly-like buzzing. Maybe it’s the way it walks, or the fact that I feel sorry for it when it gets kicked, or struggles to regain its footing on the icy ground.

Whatever it is, this thing has always creeped me out.

It doesn’t help that DARPA and Boston Dynamics have created a similar, running version of Big Dog (appropriately called Cheetah), which has broken human speed records at 28.3 mph. They plan to test it out in the field next year.

At least it doesn’t make that haunting sound.
